What that thing said

"Dear all, there is an important thing for you to note."
The voice appeared out of nowhere, causing the high-strung Tatarus to whip out his axe.
"There is a problem related to finding a suitable replacement. Please wait while the scrounging continues."
As the room fades into silence, Felicity raised her tired head to ask "Replacement?"
"Probably for Galen." Cross replied.
"If everyone that dies can get replaced, why has no one beat this stupid dungeon yet?"
"Maybe there's a limit."

What on wherever this is is going on?

Safe houses are the only place of respite in the hostile place the PCs are in right now, which is a massive dungeon filled with undead and realistic scenery in which Order gives Chaos a not-so-sporting chance to fight back and earn some decent magic weapon. Whenever the PCs want to take an extended rest, they must reach a safe house, lending a sense of urgency and defining a period in which they cannot rest. For now, the adventure is on a straight path, with plenty of magic items and potions for those who reach designated checkpoint safe houses.

Cross and Galen are both from a secret Order experiment that granted them their power. They are the successes, and thus are rather arrogant about their abilities. Still, even the best can fall victim to chance, and Cross is shaken by Galen's death. For now, there are three, and they must make it to the end by themselves, unless unexpected help arrives...

On the second level of the long and winding path...

While the totally united party is still arguing over yesterday's debacle, a panther falls on all of them. Tatarus whips out his axe and the panther transforms himself into a human named Cross, the self proclaimed best druid in all the lands. Galen takes offense and the two begins arguing, while Felicity sighs and Tatarus sharpens his axe. Suddenly, a feminine voice fills the room. She demands them to work together and make it through "her" challenge, then her presence leaves. The house disappears and they find themselves along a marshy area with a raging river and a boat in sight. Before they can make for the boat, drowned ones swim ashore and challenge them. Cross shows his skill by accidentally torching Tatarus while trying to burn the drowned ones, while Galen misses an opportunity provided by his aegis to attack another. Tatarus, for his part, cleaved through one in a single blow.

They clambered on the boat and went off. Unfortunately, they encounter some bad rapids, and Cross and Galen manage to humiliate themselves for the second time by slipping into the water. Felicity taunts them to be "up a creek without a paddle" as they breathlessly clamber on board. The party hits a shallow portion which grounds their boat until they push it to the deeper water further on. However, they were set upon, this time by aquatic famine hounds, who hamper their efforts. Determined to regain face, Galen and Cross leap forward to hold back the hounds while Felicity and Tatarus push the boat. Unfortunately, even after the boat was free they had to wait, for Galen and Cross were ignominiously knocked down by the three remaining hounds (Galen killed one) and were hit again when they tried to get up. Tatarus moved back to help and managed, with the help of Felicity's expert crossbow skills, to get both not-so-arrogant allies back on their feet at to the boat. As they pushed off, more hounds arose and pursued them.

They approach a safe house, but from it spill forth four skinwalker skeleton. Though clever positioning kept Cross from torching them all at once, they still managed to beat back the skeletons, though Galen and Tatarus were hurt. When their ranks were reduced, Galen heard the pursuing famine hounds and decided to draw back to prepare for them. Tatarus and Felicity easily dispatched the remaining one, only to see a horrifying sight - Galen getting torn to pieces by the hounds. They had sneaked up upon him and though he severely damaged them, in his weakened state he fell to their onslaught. Felicity missed from between her tears and Tatarus was too taken aback to act, but Cross, his face set into a lethal calm, unleashed the full force of his druidic might upon the cruel hounds and reduced them to ashes.

He was beyond hope - that much Cross could tell his companions. He personally incinerated it so that it could not be used against them, and scattered the ashes to the wind. Tatarus took from the now empty ground the sword, still glowing green with the arcane fire, and swore not to dishonor his name ever.

The party battled uneventfully against several opponents of little note, and reached the next safe house in time.

what happened

After being thrown together abruptly, the party was charged by a group of undead spawned from the same corpse. Howling in rage and defiance, Tatarus charged forth - only to fall short of his enemies and leaving his comrades far behind. He was promptly surrounded and wounded badly before Galen managed to burn most of the offending enemies away. The remaining frozen corpse and a skeleton still kept him down for a while even after using his healing wind.
As they continued along their path, they encountered a graveyard that spawned rot hound after rot hound. Despite Galen's comment about them being target practice, a few unlucky misses made the hounds pile up before Tatarus finally made the insight that the gravestones could be disabled to stem the flow of hounds. Felicity and Galen succeeded in disarming all of the gravestones while Tatarus killed of the stragglers, and they were on their way again. Finally they faced a triple challenge as three walls bar their path to the next safe house and the end of the day. The first and second wall both had two tombstones that functioned as before as well as well as maintaining the wall. the party decided to follow the tatic of divide and conquer and split Galen to the crawling claw tombstone and Felicity and Tatarus to the wraith's, reasoning that Galen's greenflame sword would instant kill the crawling claws. Succeeding in their task, they push forth to the second wall that had tougher opposition in the form of skeletons and hounds. they numbered seven each, but fortunately the tombstones had overworked themselves, giving the heroes time to slaughter the undead minions with the help of several lucky crits by Tatarus. Even so, when the second wall crumbled Galen's solos against the rot hounds left him injured badly though he had spent his second wind, and he stayed back to rest his wounds for a while. The three frozen corpses were not much of a trouble except when they used their frozen burst simultaneously, bringing Felicity down to the most precarious position as of yet, but thankfully for her Tatarus's luck held and the corpses were down before they could take another move - and before Galen could hobble back to help them, a fact she uses against Galen frequently.

1st level battles

The party consists of a swordmage, a rogue and a babarian. Therefore their motto is to strike fast, sttrike hard, and pray that no one gets into single digit range. And they pulled it off thrice, once per character, ending at 5, 2 and 6 respectively without a second wind. Not only that, but their player is a poor roller, such that he took 6 rounds to figure out that the tombstones were spawning the rot hounds. More on the campaign later as I as running out of time

more campaign details.

My unnamed new campaign is based of a fight between order(bad) and chaos(good). chaos has lost several times in this particular battlefield and order has amassed a large undead army to face whoever dares run the gauntlet. order is strangely formal, not making any aggressive moves and even contributing equipment and shelter to those who make it past the first round... still, none has yet to return alive.

three randomly chosen people are thrown into the gauntlet. Tatarus is a half-orc who knows he is the last survivor of something and is out for revenge against whoever he believes is guilty. Galen is a mercenary genasi who believes that he was the result of an experiment and wants to know more about who he is. Felicity was formerly an assassin who was sacked because of her unconventional methodology and got a nasty surprise when she tried to get revenge. now a halfling rogue and fugitive on the run, she is not sure if she wants to run away or kill her former employer to regain her freedom.

what campaign?

my friend want to play DnD, but doesn't bother with plot so what should I do?
so i have a stupid plot idea that is as flimsy as tissue paper - a gauntlet of enemies that you have to defeat for a nebulous reason. also, the enemy never makes any offensive moves and there are conveniently located shelters in between for you to rest!

of course there's a twist. since i am me. but I'm not telling
